Review the reading materials for this week and take a look at your Google Data Profile in order to help you prepare for this discussion forum. You will need to pick a "debate" position as the overall topic of your discussion post. Are you an Evangelist or Skeptic?

Evangelists would suggest data holds near magical potential to change the world, while skeptics increasingly worry that it poses one of the biggest civil rights threats of our generation.

Obviously, most of us would likely agree that the true position lies somewhere in the middle. But for your assignment this week you need to pick a side - you cannot remain in the middle. You may post follow-up comments in agreement with others that take your side, or to counter those on the opposing side. 

Requirements & Tips:

1. State your position. Begin by studying the history of the problem - Big Data Privacy. State the point of view you will advocate. Decide the relevant issues you intend to present. Determine which arguments you will use as evidence to support your point.
2. Incorporate personal experience. Use your own Google Data Profile to help steer your response. If you were shocked/offended, you'll likely steer towards the Skeptic side. If your first instinct was to clean up some of the things that felt inaccurate so your data profile would lead to more relevant targeting and ads ... you're probably an Evangelist. Think about the following:
3. Is your profile accurate?
4. Did anything surprise you?
5. What are the costs versus benefits of giving Google permission to leverage this profile and deliver you personalized ads.
6. What steps can you take to expand or restrict your digital footprint? Do you take them?
7. How do privacy laws come into play here?
8. Present evidence. Gather facts and figures, details, examples, quotations, and specifics as evidence to support your arguments. Present complete and relevant and accurate evidence needed to support your position. You must cite every reference used, including web sites.
9. Provide organized and logical discussion. Your challenge is to compose messages that are both substantive and concise. Remember there are many students posting on this same topic - so your objective is to post something new/interesting in your own words. Background will often be repetitive, definitions should be understood (thus, do not provide them), and commonly stated and standard party lines for each side will likely be a generic offering.
10. Compose your rebuttal. Try to identify the major arguments your peers are likely to use. Then find data with which to rebut these arguments.
11. Demonstrate respect. While this is labeled as a "debate," the real intent is to get the class to raise and discuss some of the hot-button issues in modern Digital Marketing Analytics. Despite the opposing viewpoints, all discussion is expected to be amicable and friendly. The goal is to learn, not actually win this debate. In the next three units, we will have Current Event discussions in this class. This is our launchpad to those discussions.
