Case Study:Abbey Rose works stocking shelves at Grocery City, a full service supermarket. Her days follow the same procedure. The final task of her shift is to fill the shelves with the stock that didn’t fit on the shelves from a previous day’s delivery and were held in the store’s giant cooler -- the back stock. Abbey never understood why the foods that arrived most recently filled the shelves first while the back stock was worked last. If a product’s shelf space was filled with the newest food, the older food waited in the cooler. The back stock usually found a spot on the shelf within the next couple of days, but often she found the quality had deteriorated to the point that it needed to be removed from inventory and tossed.Even though Abbey had her ideas about how things should be done and strongly believed that working the back stock first was more efficient and saved the supermarket money, Grocery City’s corporate office had strict policies on how each job is to be completed, and filling the back stock after the incoming food was the way corporate wanted the job completed. Working early morning hours provides Abbey with the opportunity to stock back stock first without anyone knowing, but she’s uncomfortable disobeying company policy - it could cost her job. Abbey is interested in pitching her idea of filling back stock first and why she thinks it’s important, but is uncertain with whom she should pitch the idea and is asking you, a coworker, for advice.
