Assessment: Case Research Project

Corporate Governance and Impacts on Fraud Prevention

Overview

The report will assess your ability to demonstrate your knowledge of corporate governance and how a particular fraud scheme was allowed to occur. Students will choose one case and using academic literature, court documents, news media and industry publications, identify the type of fraud that occurred, likely causes (including inadequate governance and accountability) and make recommendations to prevent future incidences.

Task 1: Access the ASIC website (asic.gov.au) media release pages and search for a case of directors' fraud.

Task 2: I suggest that you confine your search to reasonably contemporary director fraud cases set in Australia. We are looking for cases of essentially within firm fraud - that is where the director or officer is alleged to have perpetrated fraud in relation to a company.

Task 3: Write a case study report summarising the facts, the type of fraud, the likely causes in terms of failures of governance and accountability, and conclude with THREE main recommendations for future reference.
A couple of points to think about before you start:
• QUT encourages authentic assessment exercises; in drawing your attention to recent events there will be some uncertainty and ambiguity. You should embrace ambiguity.
• You are writing the report for a business audience. If you do not know what report writing entails, consult
