Donavan is a new graduate and has a new job at a nonprofit that coordinates services for refugees. The nonprofit is staffed by a small group of case managers, a few supervisors, a director, a fundraiser, and an office manager. The employees are passionate about their cause and Donavan loves the work that he does. He immediately notices that everyone works long hours, including time on the evening and weekends working from home. Donavan likes his supervisor and wants to make a good impression. Donavan develops a routine of working long hours along with his colleagues. After a few months, one of Donavan's colleagues takes two weeks of paid time off and announces she will be unreachable during that time. Her cases are divided up among the rest of the case managers. Donavan finds he has no more time to devote to new cases. He notices his colleagues have made more mistakes. Another case manager confides that he will also be taking PTO because he is feeling burned out. Donavan cannot imagine how the work can be done with two case managers out of the office.
