"Given the evolution of community and public health nursing, I believe nurses will contribute to the future of public health in many ways including through telehealth. One of the main challenges with our current healthcare system is a lack of easy access to see a provider. Often many patient's arrive in the ER or an urgent care seeking care for non-emergent issues, this is often due to the difficulty to be seen by a primary care provider in a timely manner. To see a specialist the process is even more difficult and may take months. Nurses can combat this issue by working through the relatively new and very popular platform telehealth to see patients conveniently and in a much faster manner to increase overall access to healthcare. Nurses could provide telehealth services to help educate the public on general medical questions, and to triage patient's to determine who really needs an in person appointment immediately, who can wait, and who does not need to come into the office at all. Preventive medicine has proven to be extremely cost effective and beneficial in the long run saving billions of dollars, the campaign against tobacco.
