Compare and contrast the academic theories of investing covered in the primary textbook with the philosophies of three of the world’s greatest investors: Berkshire Hathaway’s Warren Buffett, Berkshire Hathaway’s Charles (Charlie) Munger, and Third Avenue Value Fund portfolio manager, Martin J. (Marty) Whitman. A $10,000 investment in Berkshire Hathaway in 1965 would be worth nearly $30 million today. On the other hand, $10,000 in the S&P 500 would have risen to roughly $500,000. Marty Whitman also had phenomenal success in investing using some of the same strategies as those used by Buffett and Munger. In your examination of investment philosophies, make sure that, at a minimum, you look at these famous successful investors’ theories of diversification, beta, and weighted average cost of capital and compare them to theories presented in your investment textbook.
