Montaigne writes this because he belived that a person that is uneducated would be less likely to be influenced and he valued the honesty that he saw in those people. He also thought its is important for reason to be gided by understanding because he believed it was a more logical way of forming ideas. Montaigne caompares and contrasts Native American Society with Portuguese society by the way the people live more simply and without social hierarchies. He believes the Portuguese to be more barbarous than the cannibals because they had harsh methods of warfare, justice, and punishment like tourture and execution.
