Assignment:
1. In the prologue, notice the contrast between the calm and the storm. What details does Neufeld choose to represent? As a reader, do you feel that the prologue is sufficient form setting the scene when you meet the characters?
2. This text advances in two ways-both through the characters and day-by-day, hour-by-hour through the storm. It is important to read about the various characters in order to connect with them. You can find that information here About A.D. Once you are familiar with the characters, notice how each one deals with the storm as it hits. How might the particular life circumstances of the various characters correspond with their own level of responsiveness when the hurricane strikes?
3. Also, note how time proceeds. Of the text you've covered in the last few units, this is one of the most linear. The "camera" starts rolling right before the storm and does not leave the characters until the aftermath. Shots of the characters are interspersed with larger-scale images of the storm. How does the contrast between man and nature impact your reading of the story?
4. By the story's midpoint, after the storm and the resulting floods, you see the characters each facing challenges unique to their situations. Abbas and Darnell, for example, try to save their shop, while Leo and Michelle worry about what they'll come home to. Again, think about the character's responses to their situations. Are there any characters that come across as more sympathetic than others?
5. It is also important to notice what happens when agencies try to help. Some groups are more helpful than others, other situations towards the last sections of the work show how groups of people banded together to overcome the floods and survive. Consider the various side characters that get introduced as the story nears the end. How do they influence your response as a reader? How do the main characters interact with them?
6. Towards the end of the book (or Chapter 14 on the Web), the author looks back on the main characters after Katrina. Some have gotten back to normal while others still seem in limbo. What are your thoughts on the story's conclusion? Are there any characters you would like to know more about?
