Assignment:
In the final chapter of Latino USA: A Cartoon History, we get a strong sense of the Latinx experience growing out of the late 1990s and early 2000s as a mixture of politics, history, and popular culture. The turn of the modern century was simultaneously a time of deep uncertainty and high excitement. This is significant as it points to how Latinx experiences are coming together more than ever, as part of evolving American experience that is at once idealized in many ways (think "American Dream") even as it is complicated by evolving and devolving attitudes toward Latinos, including those born in the US, as foreign or "alien."
For this week's discussion, you will take one of the new concepts, events, artifacts, or people mentioned in "Part 5" and "EPILOGUE" of Latino USA (do not use anyone spotlighted in this module!), do a bit of research on line for more information, and then analyze how the element you've chosen is significant both in the context of thinking about Latinxs and American culture in this era, conflicting viewpoints, and to your own experience(s). of Latinx culture. This last part is very important.
How is your chosen subject (event, person, artifact, concept from this era) significant in this era in terms of:
- Latinxs and their diverse and changing roles in American culture at the turn of the 21st Century
- Conflicting viewpoints during this era
Your own experiences of Latinx culture and what that brings to this analysis.
You may interpret this fairly loosely, but make sure that you are making a clear connection to this time period (1998 - 2010ish) and that you cover all three elements in your post.
