Introduction to Mental Health
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
It is beneficial to familiarise yourself with the relationship between the assessment and the course objectives.
• CO1. Examine the biopsychosocial, cultural and historical factors that shape the conceptualisation of mental health and common mental illnesses.
• CO2. Respond to a person having a mental health crisis.
• CO3. Differentiate between the clinical presentations associated with common mental illnesses.
• CO4. Explain the statutory regulations that apply to people experiencing serious mental illness.
• CO5. Explain how recovery values inform contemporary mental health practice.
TASK 1: CULTURALLY SAFE CARE
Based on week 1 and 2 learning resources, identify 1-2 key principles you consider to be important when caring for people with mental illness in two of the following population groups:
You may choose to use one principle and apply to both groups, or a different principle for each group.
1. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
2. People living in rural and remote areas
3. Refugees
4. Culturally and linguistically diverse people.
The main element of this Portfolio task is developing guiding principles for mental health care. Your answer should also include a brief explanation of why these principles are necessary, and how they respond to the needs of the two population groups identified.
TASK 2: ISBAR TEMPLATE
PART A (400 WORDS):
Prepare for this Task by
• watching the videos on communicating using the ISBAR https://youtu.be/5jY94y_nyNA
• downloading and reading the ISBAR Learning Guide from the Assessment 1 Resources folder
• downloading and reading the ISBAR Template.
Start the task by watching the following video of a General Practitioner interviewing a Woman experiencing panic and anxiety.
As you watch, record details of the woman's story and situation, her understandings and those of the clinician.
Complete the ISBAR Template based on your observations from the video. Consider what you would need to communicate if you were referring the consumer to another health worker (who does not have any information on her). Use the ISBAR Learning Guide (in week 3 content) to help you formulate your responses. Remember that as this is a handover tool, all information must be from the scenario and written in a clear and concise manner but with essential details. If there are gaps or no information has been provided, you can indicate that further information is required. You may use dot-points to record your handover information.
The word count of 400 words allows description, but you will need to be concise.
PART B (400 WORDS):
In 400 words, respond to the following question, reflecting on the example you've discussed in Part A:
What principles of recovery were demonstrated during the interview between the clinician and the consumer? Briefly explain the principles that you observed and describe how they were demonstrated.
Include your response in the appropriate section of the ISBAR template.
Submit your completed ISBAR Template as a Word document by the end of Week 4.
TASK 3: VULNERABLE GROUPS AND SELF HARM
In a Word document, respond to the following two questions.
1. Certain groups are considered vulnerable in our society, including children and adolescents, the aged and LBGTIQ+ people. Discuss considerations when providing mental health care to one of the above groups. (~400 words).
You will need to describe considerations for when working with one of the groups listed. Reflect on the course content discussed in week 9 to determine which processes might be put in place when working with this group.
2. What should you consider when working with a person who is at-risk of self-harm? Provide your rationale. (~400 words).
You will need to reflect on the course content discussed in week 8.
Submit a Word document as your response (800 + 10%) by the end of Week 10.
Please note: whilst you will not be penalised for exceeding the word limit, your marker will stop reading text that exceed the limit i.e. anything past the word limit will not be marked.
Your submission will be marked on your considerations when working with the vulnerable group (40%); Considerations when working with a person who is at risk of self-harm; Presentation
