MP122 Analytical and Statistical Techniques
You need to prepare a group analysis report, which requires an amount of computer work and written comment. Each question describes what you are required to do, so please follow these carefully!
In this assignment, you will analyse a randomised subset of a dataset from a survey. Two variables are selected, i.e, math and science. They are scores from tests.
Task 1: Perform descriptive summary of the science variable
a) Find the sample mean and sample standard deviation as well as the 5-number summary of the science variable.
b) Create a boxplot showing the distribution of the science variable. Comment upon the shape of the distribution: is it symmetric? If it is not, is it positively or negatively skewed?
c) Calculate the end-points of the whiskers to identify any outliers present.
Task 2: Show the relationship between science and math
a) Construct a scatter plot of science against math (i.e., values of science and math are on the Y-axis and X-axis respectively).
b) Calculate the correlation coefficient of math and science variables and describe the strength of this relationship.
Task 3: Perform a regression analysis of math on Science
a) Perform the regression analysis, using Science as the dependent variable and math as a predictor, to determine the coefficients of the regression line.
b) Write the regression equation. Interpret the slope.
c) Perform the hypothesis test to determine if the slope is significantly differently from zero at 5% significance level.
Conclusion:
From the tasks above, write a short report summarising your main findings: summary description about the variable science; and the relationship between science and math.
