It has been argued that many cases of infant mortality rates are caused by teenage mothers who, for various reasons, do not receive proper prenatal care. From the Statistical Abstract of the United States we have statistics on the teenage birth rate (per 1000) and the infant mortality rate (per 1000 live births) for the 48 contiguous states. The data are given in Table 7.20, where Teen denotes the birthrate for teenage mothers and Mort denotes the infant mortality rate.
(a) Perform a regression to estimate Mort using Teen as the independent variable. Do the results confirm the stated hypothesis? Interpret the results.
(b) Construct a residual plot. Comment on the results

If you take samples of 25 lines from a C-value table and find that the confidence interval for the proportion of even-numbered digits captures 95% 21 times.
The number of hurricanes that are formed during each hurricane season can be modeled using the Poisson probability distribution. History suggests that the average if number of hurricanes formed during a year is 6.0 hurricanes.
Consider a balanced four by three factorial. Show that orthogonal contrasts in row means (ignoring factor B) are also orthogonal contrasts for all twelve treatments when the contrast coefficients have been repeated across rows (ij = i).
A reasonable summary of the data might be provided by relating the score Si given by Si = 1 if never, Si = 2 if irregular, Si = 3 if fall and winter, and Si = 4 if whole year. What method can be used to relate mean BMD to this score variable?
(a) What is the probability that the number of heads equals the number showing on the die?
