Consider the following relation with five attributes: CURRICULUM(CID, Major, Year, Department, College)

The functional dependencies in CURRICULUM are:

CID -> Major, Year

Major, Year -> CID

Department -> College

Major -> Department, College

CURRICULUM has two candidate keys: {CID} and {Major, Year}.

a. CURRICULUM is not in BCNF. Construct a decomposition of CURRICULUM into a collection of relations in BCNF that has the lossless join property. Use the algorithm given in class, and show your work. (That is, at each step, state which functional dependency you are removing from which relation in the current decomposition, and what the resulting decomposition is after you remove it. Answers that show only the final result without explaining the steps taken to obtain it will receive minimal credit.)

b. Is CURRICULUM in 3NF? Explain why or why not.
