ADM 1000 Analytics for Decision Making - Curtin University
Assessment 1: Individual Project Part 1
As a consultant, you are submitting a tender/proposal to a government of a country to help them prepare a country-level profile (in the form of a final report). You believe that you have the necessary data management and analysis skills to carry out this task. Country level profiles are used to assist policy makers in preparing strategic plans for the country.
You will be assigned a country in the tutorials.
In the first stage of this project, you will prepare a tender/proposal which will explicitly outline the information that you will include in the final report (part 2 of the project).
Your proposal will consider the following aspects of the country:
1. Population
2. Macroeconomic indicators (Interest rates, inflation rate etc.)
3. Environmental indicators (CO2 emissions, air quality etc.)
4. COVID-19 impact
In addition to the above, you are required to choose another aspect of your choice which you think is unique to your country and will help in its development. Examples of this include main industries, technological capability, human rights information etc.
All the aspects listed above are quite broad. It is up to you to select what you think it appropriate for the policy makers. For example, when presenting the country's population information, we could choose to focus on population growth, age group distribution or gender distribution. Additionally, with most of the data being time series, you will also need to decide what time horizon you want to focus on. For example, in the population case, do you want to consider all the data available (allyears) or only the recent years. Please provide very brief reasons for your choices.
The proposal will consist of the following sections:
Title page
Cover letter - A very brief letter outlining your case for assisting in the preparation of the country level profile.
1. Table of contents
2. Proposal -What will be included in the final report? Briefly, describe why this work is important.
3. Methodology - Specific details on how the information will be presented (relate to materials in module 2 and 3).Also included here will be the details on data sources and definitions (module 1). You may also include any limitations on data availability (if applicable).
4. References - A list of resources (incl. data sources) used or referenced in the proposal. Please use the Chicago referencing style (see unit outline for further details).
5. Project Timeline - List of activities/tasks that will be completed and the expected time each of these will take.
Please note that there is a maximum word limit of 700 words for the proposal. This excludes the cover letter, referencesand the project timeline.
Referencing Requirements Chicago.
Assessment 2: Individual Project Part 2
Assessment Task
The country representatives have accepted your proposal. Please go ahead with carrying out the activities/tasks mentioned in the proposal (part 1). In addition to the activities stated in part 1, the representatives would also like you to include thefollowing items in your report:
1. Explore the relationship across a pair of different aspects of the country over time. For example, is there a relationship between the population and the environmental indicators over time? Can this relationship be quantified? Note, that your choice of aspects could be influenced by the available data.
2. Construct a confidence interval for one of the aspects. Please state all assumptions clearly and provide an interpretation of the interval.
3. Are there any legal or privacy issues with the data that is being used in the report? Please provide some details/justification.
The three requests above must be incorporated into the methodology section i.e. update the methodology section from part
As before, we are expected to apply the knowledge from the unit modules to address these requests. One of the main features of the final report is the results of the analysis. For this section you are expected to produce adashboard using the data for your country. The dashboard is simply a collection of different type of graphs (similar to theones in our tutorial/lab work). The emphasis is presenting the data using different types of plots such as time series plots, scatter plots, histograms, box plots and/or cumulative percentage charts. Ensure that the plot type is matched well with the data that is being used. In addition to this, results should also include numerical data summaries as well as the analysis pertaining to the first two requests.
Lastly, it is very important that we provide brief commentary on all plots/results of the analysis. The commentary is expected to be based on the content covered in the unit.
The final report should contain the following components:
• Title page - Update from part 1
• Cover letter- Update from part 7: This should now also include an updated statement about what the report is about. It should explicitly state any changes (if applicable) that you have made since the original proposal.
• Table of contents - Update from part 1
• Executive Summary - A brief outline/summary of what the report contains. This summary must be between 0.75 to
1 page maximum. This summary must not contain any plots and/or tables. It is strongly advised that this section bewritten at the end once all the other sections have been finalised.
• Introduction - Update from part 1 (Proposal section): Incorporate the coverage of the new requests.
• Methodology - Update from part 7: Please include the methodology for addressing the three new requests.
• Results - Refer to the description of this section on the first page.
• Conclusion & Recommendations - Adequately summarise the main results of the analysis and propose recommendations/suggestions for future work. For example, what (in your expert opinion) would be possible if you had more time and resources
• References - Update from part 7: A list of resources (incl. data sources) used or referenced in the final report. Please use the Chicago referencing style. Refer to unit outline for further details.
• Project Timeline - Update from part 7: List of activities/tasks that were completed in order to finalise the report and time taken for each of these activities.
• Appendix -This section should contain the original proposal (part 1) submission.
