You were recently promoted to the CIO position in your company. One of your direct reports (the VP of IT Operations) was one of the people considered for the CIO job. This person has been with the company five years longer than yourself. Consequently this person believes themselves to be more qualified for the position than you. Being passed over has greatly affected their attitude towards their work and loyalty to the company. After months of incidents where you have had conflicts with this employee and despite efforts on your part to soothe this employee's feelings, it has come to your knowledge that the employee sent out an e-mail wherein they suggest you are not qualified for your position. This e-mail went to other staff members in your department, but to your knowledge did not reach anyone outside of the department.
