Consider the thin-walled beam section illustrated in the figure below. The beam has a vertical load of V = 500 kN acting on one end and is rigidly supported at the other end as illustrated. In the figure below, dimensions are given in mm and the section centroid is 77.5 mm from the lower edge as illustrated. The second moment of area of the section about the centroidal axis illustrated is I = 834.85 × 106 mm4.
(a) Determine the shear stress at the four points in the beam, labelled (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv).
(b) Sketch the distribution of shear stress across the horizontal and vertical portions of the beam section, noting the shape of the distributions and key values.
(c) What are the values of the principal stresses on the neutral axis of this beam?
(d) Show the principle stresses on the neutral axis on a correctly oriented element relative to the axis of the beam.
