Question: The primary feature of autonomous cars is the control system software. The vehicle uses sensors and software data to "see" its surroundings. On-board computers make driving decisions but, one critique of these systems is they don't have the ability to make judgment decisions. Consider the scenario below and share your thoughts if you have a chance. Dan is driving his autonomous car (AV) on a small two-lane road. He has the feature on, the car is driving itself and as required, he is alert. Suddenly, an SUV veers into his lane and the AV swerves into the shoulder to avoid colliding with the much bigger SUV. Unfortunately, a lady with a baby in a stroller is in the shoulder and both are killed. Dan survives. The family of those killed sue Dan who in turn, sues the car company. Dan argues he would NOT have hit the lady and the stroller because, using his discretionary judgment, that was the more egregious reaction to the situation.
