Question: This assignment is reflective and asks you to first consider how you might promote a more positive view of conflict and the value of difference. You will also apply the concepts learned in the course to analyze a personal conflict.

Respond to the following prompts. The first is adapted from the questions on p. 153 of the Augsburger text. Be sure that you incorporate the concepts that we have covered in this course in your responses. Note individual response minimum word counts.

Assuming that conflict is a natural result of differences between people and is in itself neither positive nor negative, how can those who see themselves as peacemakers best promote a more productive view of conflict and its value in helping us appreciate diversity?
Consider a conflict that is occurring in your life right now. If you have no active conflicts, think of the most recent one in which you were involved.

  • How did each of you contribute to the conflict?
  • How might identity threats have played a role in the escalation?
  • What triggers (by you and by the other person) have taken place?
  • What emotional responses have each of you experienced?
  • What steps could you take to support the threatened identity or identities of the other person in an effort to de-escalate the situation?
