Consider a new design of a military airplane, that is crewed by 8 men without passengers. This airplane shall cruise at Ma = 0.6, at a height of 30,000 ft. It shall carry a special payload in terms of electronic warfare equipments with a total weight of 20,000 lb. Assuming the airplane shall be able to loiter for 2 hours at a distance of 2,000 nmi from the takeoff point, estimate the design takeoff gross weight by using necessary iteration. Make use of historical data and trends for such designs.

8. Assume you have the following data of a flying bird and two aircrafts, i.e.:

a. A small sparrow bird, with weight, W = 0.3 N, wing area of S = 80 cm2,

b. A Fokker F27 turboprop airliner, with weight W = 190,000 N, wing area S = 70 m2, and

c. A Boeing B747-400, a four-engine wide body commercial jet airliner,with mass of M = 397 tons, and the wing area S = 560 m2.

Assuming flying at sea level with the air density, ρ = 1.225 kg/m3, the free-fall acceleration, g = 9.81 m/s2, and a similar lift coefficient of CL = 0.6 for all the above flying creatures.

i. Derive the respective flying velocities.

ii. Are the results realistic? If not, what do you propose to arrive into more acceptable conclusions?
