Conservation of momentum

In particular conservation of momentum, for collisions involving 2 carts system, the carts exchanged momentum allowing us to see how the momentum was the same, within experimental error, before and after the collision. This works because the collision between the carts must obey Newton's third law and since the carts were free to move, we could ignore the forces of the collision. But what if we eliminate a cart and have the other collide with a fixed wall. Can we still ignore the forces of the collision, or are they now external forces? Can we still count on conservation of momentum?
