Assignment:

One of the most commonly used cell lines in labs today is called HeLa. These cells orginially came from a poor black woman named Henrietta Lacks who died of cervical cancer. The cells were taken without her knowledge and have since been multiplied literally millions of times. HeLa cells were used to develop the polio vaccine and countless other medical treatments and were even sent up into space to see the effects of zero gravity on cells. Henrietta's family feels that they should have been compensated in some way, since her cells spawned the entire industry of cell culture. What do you think? What are the possible negative consequences of compensating individuals for their tissue?
