Connecting our virtual machine to a virtual standard switch (vSS) or virtual distributed switch (vDS) for communication is required in vSphere but proper configuration is also important. This ensures the settings are selected so data flows smoothly and evenly across the virtual infrastructure. Migrations are also common on virtual infrastructure for routine maintenance or outage mitigation. Thus, knowing how to configure and migrate virtual machines to and from a standard or distributed switch is critical for overall success of communications.
