Andrea Yates was found guilty in drowning of five of her young children in the bathtub. She was convicted of capital murder, but the jury refused the death penalty. Was sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after 40 years.
A subsequent trial in 2006 found her not guilty by reason of insanity, as she was suffering from postpartum depression, had attempted to commit suicide before the murder of her children, and was under close supervision of her husband and mother-in-law.
