1. There has been considerable discussion in the medical literature in recent years on the role of diet in the development of heart disease. The serum-cholesterol levels of a group of people who eat a primarily macrobiotic diet are measured. Among 24 of them, ages 20-39, the mean cholesterol level was found to be 175 mg/d, with a standard deviation of 35 mg/dL. Use these data to answer the questions below.

a. If the mean cholesterol level in the general population in this age group is 230 mg/dL, and the distribution is assumed to be normal, then test the hypothesis that the group of people on a macrobiotic diet have cholesterol levels different from those of the general population. Use the critical-value method (i.e., the Neyman & Pearson approach, pg. 51 of your textbook) to test the hypothesis. Assume α=0.05. Show all your calculations.

b. Compute the 95% confidence interval for the true mean cholesterol level in this group. Show all calculations.

c. What is the p-value for the test statistic you calculated in question a? How does the p-value approach (i.e., the Fisher approach, page 55 of your textbook) relate to the critical value approach you used in question a?
