Assignment:
This reflection paper, Here is the assignment wording from the syllabus, student is expected to reflect on cultural issues discussed in media (newspapers, magazines, online, television shows, movies, and commercials), through the lenses of the material discussed in the class, and within the context of your personal experience. Focus on the cultural traditions or heritage of your ancestors and your current family situation, or languages spoken, food traditions, religious and cultural ceremonies, weddings, funerals etc. Feel free to be open and honest in the reflection - you will not be penalized by sharing a prejudice that you may harbor. But you will be penalized for not considering the elements of critical thinking.
An alternative to conducting a media analysis relating to cultural issues to reflect on, you are highly encouraged to get out and do something, like attend area events that would push you out of your comfort zone to learn more about other people. You are encouraged to attend these events with an open mind and be willing to engage in whatever activity is happening. Experiencing first hand people or ideas that are different from you will allow you an opportunity to formulate your own impression and not rely on the media's view. Such examples of engaging are: volunteer at a soup kitchen to see what food they serve the needy, or attend a religious service or visit a local ethnic grocery store or attend a public event at the library or find an farmer's market or summer festival.
In any community setting you can reflect on how culture is created and maintained. This could include an analysis of cultural issues at your workplace, the gym, a meeting, the library, the mall, the fairgrounds, a funeral, church service (you get the idea). The point is for you to be in a social setting.Your reflection must be typed, a minimum of one page.
