Coursework Description
You are required to carry out a FREE vibrational analysis of beams (recommended: axial vibration).
To do so:
Question 1- Select a beam or multi-beam scenario from a real process (i.e. an industrial process or structure); Hence, you are required to find such a structure that interests you, and support your findings with photographic evidence and/or datasheet (for example why you select single or multiple beam OR a specific boundary condition for that beam structure). You are also required to specify the material that the structure is constructed from, and hence its material properties and supports in order that you can apply the correct boundary conditions (e.g. cantilever or simply supported beams etc.). All assumptions allowed and required for simplifying your problem must be listed (such as static loading condition, identical area across the length of a beam, symmetric geometries, etc.).
Question 2- Conduct the free vibrational analysis under one or more (combined) specific state conditions (bending, torsion, axial)
Question 3- Create your assignment according to the following structure:
• Description of selected beam(s) scenario - 1 page
• Aim and objectives - 0.5 page
• Supporting information (properties, dimensions and vibrational mode) - 1 page
• Theoretical (analytical) formulation for selected beam(s) - 1.5 pages
• Theoretical derivation of natural frequencies - 1 pages
• Simplified 2D-bar Finite Element Analysis (FEA) - 1 page
• FEA derivation of natural frequencies - 1 page
• Discussion comparison with theoretical calculations where you elaborate comparisons - 1 page
• Design modification of selected beam(s), using FEA only, in order to increase natural frequencies - 1 page
• Concluding remarks (summary) - 0.5 page
• References - 0.5 page
• Appendices (if any)
Note:
• It is recommended that as for the account of hand calculations, one should choose boundary conditions with existing (or possible derivation of) theoretical formulation.
• Do NOT place Figures in the Appendix; include them in the relevant section.
• You MUST reference any figures or theory you take from books or articles.
• Length of Report (excluding any Appendices) must NOT exceed 10 pages.
• You must elaborate on selection of boundary conditions, theoretical formulation and simplifying assumptions.
Page limit: 10 pages maximum (excluding Appendices)
