Paper- Computation of the Equivalent Mohr-Coulomb Parameters for Hoek-Brown Rock

S.K. Sharan - Laurentian University, Sudbury, Canada

Abstract

In this paper, a novel general method is proposed for the computation of the equivalent Mohr-Coulomb (EM-C) parameters to conduct the elastoplastic analysis of rock mass governed by the generalized Hoek-Brown (GH-B) failure criterion. The proposed method is based on an iterative procedure.

The least-squares regression is used for the linearization of the non-linear yield function to compute the new values of the EM-C parameters. By analysing stresses and displacements around underground openings using analytical and finite element methods, it is shown that the proposed method is convergent, efficient and effective.

The principal advantages of the proposed method are that it is quite general, the computational difficulties encountered in the implementation of the GH-B failure criterion may be circumvented and a general purpose finite element software that does not have the GH-B failure criterion as a material option may be used to analyse a jointed rock mass.
