"Activity levels at the end of adolescence are alarmingly low, and by age 19, they are comparable to 60-year-olds," says a study conducted by senior author, Vadim Zipunnikov, assistant professor in the Bloomberg School's Department of Biostatistics. Physical activity is the modifiable factor that can enhance bone density if the individual performs regularly. Weight-bearing activity has been shown to increase bone accretion more than non-weight bearing activity.

"For school-age children, the primary window for physical weight bearing and non-weight bearing activity is in the afternoon between two and six P.M. Schools can serve as a site for child exercise programs. So the big question is how do we modify daily schedules, especially in schools, to be more conducive to increasing physical activity and related bone density?"
