Observation Exercise Paper Guidelines
Students will be required to conduct an observation of ONE site on a college/university campus where students frequently gather such as the cafeteria, a student hub, student fitness center, library, coffee shop, "outdoor setting/green space," sporting event, residence hall lobby, etc. in order to systematically observe the physical setting and student interactions.
You may choose to conduct your observation at any college or university campus.
• I have selected Virginia College - Montgomery, AL
Students will be provided an observation notes handout (ATTACHED) to guide their written observations.
While taking detailed notes, please use and address the "List of Items of Interest" (e.g., physical setting, participants, activities, interactions, etc.)
Paper Guidelines: Using the observation notes handout you complete during your observation experience, you will be required to write a 2-3 typed paper that addresses your observations.
At a minimum, your paper should:
• 1) begin with details on the physical setting,
• 2) observations of students and student interactions in the setting, and
• 3) a summation of your analysis and interpretation of your observations in the setting.
The paper should be written in first-person and detail your reflections on what you observed. While this paper is more informal in nature, students are expected to produce a paper that is reflective of graduate-level writing (e.g., proper grammar, clarity, organization, etc.).
Since this is a brief paper assignment, you will need to be very focused and specific in detailing your observations in your writing.
APA, 6th edition formatting guidelines and include an APA Title page.
