Environmental Analysis
You are trying to demonstrate that you understand the brewery and the environment in which you operate. Essentially, discuss issues such as:
• What kind of operating environment are you in and how is that predicted to change?
• Where do you see market opportunity and the ability to gain competitive advantage?
a. Operating Environment
A synopsis of the external environment and industry sector that your business will be a part of, that may include answering the following:
• Where does your business operate?
• What are the relevant trends, both in the industry and generally in the region? This should include a look back, as well as a look forward.
• What kinds of shifts have taken place in the recent past that might have affected your operation?
• What kinds of opportunities might you be able to exploit moving forward in the future?
• Are there partners or other businesses that may help you to leverage more business?
b. Current Operations and Competition
Conduct an analysis of your current operating position.
• What are your current key performance metrics?
• What level of financing do you have available?
This should be an investigation of your competitors, that includes the following:
• An assessment of their competitive advantage and,
• an analysis of how you will overcome any entry barriers to your chosen market(s).
o Remember that you are operating a microbrewery with flexibility in terms of quality, quantity, and operating philosophy. Sometimes opportunities are found in more than one area.
c. The Market
An examination of the primary, secondary, tertiary target market for your products and services.
• Describe the market(s) you wish to pursue - these are typically described in demographic, geographic, psychographic, and/or behavioural characteristics.
• What shifts will be made to attract new markets? What is your market share potential?
• Provide general details of your intended pricing strategy, including how your pricing may change over time (you do NOT need to state specific prices here - that will come in a future section)
• Briefly discuss your marketing channel mix; what percentage of business do you expect to be derived from the various platforms available?
