Assignment
As scientists, we use a lot of data from different areas. Citizen Science is a specific type of data - meaning that the data are collected by volunteers who are usually not trained scientists. Bird watchers, fishers, and gardeners who keep records of what they observe and see are all examples of biological citizen scientists. A big benefit of citizen science is that data can be collected over wide areas and long-time scales that would be impossible for the (relatively) few scientists working in each field to cover. However, citizen science needs to be done properly, with records carefully taken and the quality of observations checked.
Assignment
In this assignment you will be exploring one of the world's largest citizen science data repositories, iNaturalist. You will select a specific country and species that interests you and you will:
1. Record the species and location you are exploring
2. Conduct a little literature research about the species
3. Identify and code data into a simple table
4. Critically describe and evaluate the data
5. Identify any conservation or management issues facing this species
In your own time, conduct your research and enter in your information into the attached desktop review template included for DOWNLOAD at the end of this document.
