Mental State Examination & Psychiatric Assessment
Purpose
The mental state examination (MSE) is a structured way of observing and describing a patient's current mental state, this is assessed under the domains of appearance, behaviour, mood & affect, speech, thought form, thought content, perception, cognition and insight. The purpose of the MSE is to obtain a comprehensive cross-sectional description of the patient's mental state, which when combined with the biographical and historical information of the psychiatric history, allows the clinician to make an accurate diagnosis and formulation.
Method
The student is required to conduct a comprehensive mental health assessment based on a video uploaded to blackboard. The student will be required to provide relevant documentation covering the topics included in a psychiatric assessment, MSE and a thorough and safe plan of care, including interventions and resources.
The assessment mark is in two (2) parts:
• Mental State Examination
• Psychiatric Assessment & Plan of Care
