Homework
Here are some additional data to be combined with the data from Problem Set 1. The following 19 states do not permit the use of the death penalty: AK, CT, DC, HI, IA, IL, KS, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, ND, NJ, NM, NY, RI, VT, WV, and WI. Remember to include all of your STATA commands, STATA output, answers, and interpretations in your final document to receive full credit. You are welcome, and encouraged, to collaborate and work with your peers toward the completion of this assignment. However, each of you must submit independent assignments to be graded.
1. Use these data to address the following question: Is region a determinant of whether a state allows the death penalty? Test at the 0.01 and 0.05 levels of significance according to the specifications listed in a-c below.
a. Use the following four regions in a single contingency table analysis: Northeast (CT, MA, ME, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, VT), Central (IA, IL, IN, KS, MI, MN, MO, ND, NE, OH, SD, WI), South (AL, AR, DC, DE, FL, GA, KY, LA, MD, MS, NC, OK, SC, TN, TX, VA, WV), and West (AK, AZ, CA, CO, HI, ID, MT, NM, NV, OR, UT, WA, WY).You must create a variable called region where 0=northeast, 1=central, 2=south, and 3=west. Conduct a chi squared test to determine is the region effects the use of the death penalty.
b. Test whether the Central region differs from the rest of the United States combined using a t-test. Hint: Think of this as Central vs. Not Central.
c. Test whether the South and West combined are different from the Northeast and Central states combined using a t-test.
d. Compare the results from problem 1, parts a-c above. What conclusion(s) can you draw from these three tests considered collectively? What further information or test(s) might help to resolve the issue?
2. Use each state's homicide rate for 2010 and the four regional designations to determine whether the homicide rate differs across region. Test at the 0.01 and 0.05 levels.
a. Test this with an ANOVA.
b. Test this with a regression analysis using three regional dummy variables (Northeast, West, and South).
c. Discuss the results from problem 2, parts a and b. Does the homicide rate differ across regions?
