Because many early African societies did not leave behind written records, much of what we know about these societies must be concluded from archaeological ruins. For your initial post to the discussion, choose one of the main archaeological sites of ancient Africa (such as Volubilis, Great Zimbabwe, or the Ruins of Aksum). What are some conclusions about that society that you can develop using archaeology? In general, what are the potential drawbacks to using archaeology? What do physical remains leave out of the historical record? How does our understanding of ancient Africa differ from our understanding of societies with written language?
