A 5-year-old female is brought to the office by her mother for concerns with constipation and pain with bowel movements. Mom describes lumpy hard stool or "rabbit pellets" (Bristol Stool Scale Type 1 and 2) and says she cries when she tries to have a bowel movement and then won't go. Mom reports the child was potty trained without any issues around 2 years of age. She attended daycare two days a week until beginning kindergarten this year. She eats and plays normally, with no other concerns. The physical exam is normal except for you can palpate some non-tender fullness in the descending colon (this is normal/expected for patients with constipation).
