Medical testing often shows a range of values for what is considered normal. For example, a normal blood glucose value is considered 70 to 100 mg/dL. It can be useful for doctors to order medical testing even when a patient is not ill, as this can help establish a baseline value of what is normal for that individual. If a doctor has a patient with ten years of blood testing records, and that patient's glucose level is always around 70 mg/dL, they might be concerned if that patient returned a glucose value of 110 mg/dL, despite this value not being much outside of the normal range. After all, this represents an over 50% increase in this patient's typical levels. Conversely, such a test result might not be concerning at all for another patient who consistently shows blood glucose levels around 100 mg/dL. A normal healthy adult will have alkaline phosphatase levels of 30 to 120 U/L. Would a doctor be concerned by the test results of either patient tested in the liver function panel exercise?
