Question

What is not in this report is the concern before the surgery of the patient and family. The patient lives in an assisted living facility with his wife of 50 years. His wife suffered a massive stroke seven years ago and required ongoing assistance with activities of daily living day and night. The patient provides many of these care but does have the help of nursing assistants scheduled for morning and afternoon care. In addition, while hospitalized, the patient's daughter stays with his wife to provide assistance and support for her both physically and emotionally. Following the surgery, the patient is admitted to the Critical Care Unit, ventilated, and later weaned a normal procedure. All went very well. When the patient was later weaned from the ventilator and coming out of the effects of anesthesia, the patient experienced intense pain, mostly in his side. Refer to Hinkle et al., (2022) starting on page 748. You are the nurse coming on after the patient was extubated. You have the surgery report and the report from the last shift related to pain. Based on the surgical report, could you explain to the patient the basis for his pain?
