Conceptualizations of caring in nursing [Media]

There is a lack of consensus on the place of caring in nursing due to different conceptualizations of caring. Morse et al. (1991) identified at least five views of caring in the nursing literature.

Caring as a human trait, as a natural condition of being human

  • Concern: if it's a human trait, there are humans who might not have it; and it probably can't be taught

Caring as a moral imperative, such as a virtue or a value.

  • Concern: this sets up caring as an obligation or a duty which in nursing can lead to exhaustion

Caring as an affect toward one's self, one's patient, and one's job.

  • Concern: this conceptualization is the one we most commonly understand, the problem with it is that if caring all emotional there is the possibility of emotional attachment, dependency, inefficiency, and burnout.

Caring as an interpersonal interaction something existing between two persons.

  • Concern: this conceptualization isn't really too problematic, in fact, it is pretty basic. In nursing, the patient nurse relationship is foundational. The one consideration here is that the patient encounters a lot of different nurses, so we can only hope that each of the nurses is caring and interpersonally interactive.

Caring as a therapeutic intervention a deliberate act with a planned goal in mind.

  • Concern: this conceptualization is the common one referred to as "caring for" the patient. The problem lies in that if caring for is only conceptualization of caring then what happens to the relational "caring about".

Of the 5 conceptualization of caring presented. which idea most closely aligns with and the beliefs surrounding nurse caring. briefly describe?
