Bio-Tek Corporation the company for which I work, is a rapidly expanding bio-tech firm, engaged in the research and development of diagnostic health care products based on genetic engineering techniques, notwithstanding the application of very up-to-date technology, experienced management is not a asset of the firm. The executive are often scientists, untrained in management and behavior. Many of the high level executive decisions have been made with only profit in mind, often forgetting about the employees, creating a low level of morale in the company.
This was the picture I was drawn when I went to work at Bio-Tek Corp. (BTC). As this was my first job, and due to my personality in general, I was very enthused about my new place of employment. Through the salary was low, and the work got monotonous at time, I always work hard, seeing the potential and opportunity at the company. BTC was just waiting for new ideas to act upon. I never left the office until what I felt should be accomplished in a day was complete. Sales were increasing 30-40% over the last year, and being in the marketing department, our work load was increasing proportionately. Still, I always stay until the day’s work was completed. This led to many, many late nights and even weekends (no overtime pay). But, I felt I was making progress. I felt I could practically run the everyday activities in my office alone (we are only 4 people)
With my nudging we acquired or first computer system in November. This took hours of preparation, sorting and entering data, and just getting the kinks out of the system. For a few months, no one know how to use it except me. This was very beneficial to me and my position in the company, but it to up even more time. But I always made sure I finished what I planned doing. I realized I had been setting goals in my own mind and striving to accomplish them. I probably was also setting them for the department as a whole, but not one expect my supervisor was cooperating.
The women I worked with told me I was crazy. She left at 5:00 every day and wasted a lot of tine during the day. Her attitude was that she has not been compensated in 3 ½ years, so why should she work had. I listened, but still did what I thought was right. I had been feeling the need for a “reward” as well. I had been motivating myself for a n entire year, providing great results and not receiving any compensation. I was working so much I was not putting enough time at school. I only did the minimum work needed to get by. This was not like me at all. I normally put my whole self into what I am doing, like I was doing at work, unfortunately, my school work was suffering. But, I felt the time I put in at BTC was worth it.
March was the month for my annual review. This was the time I had been waiting for. I wanted to find out if the time I had put in BTC would pay off. I was a bit nervous listening to everyone around me saying I would never be compensated, I had put in my extra hours when 98% of the company left at 5:01. I also sacrificed my schoolwork. I had made up my own mind that if I did not get compensated, I was going to leave the company, it would be my time to move on.
