Aims:
This assignment aims to give you an opportunity to:
-Identify, interpret and analyse stakeholder needs
-Research and consider an issue of reasonable complexity using the concepts of requirement engineering and Functional Analysis
-Apply tools and techniques considered in class to capture your thoughts and ideas on the topic researched.
Introduction and Requirements:
Buildings can have an extensive direct and indirect impact on the environment, society and the economy. The field of sustainable design seeks to balance the needs of these areas by using an integrated approach to create design solutions. Implementation of a Sustainable design helps to reduce, or completely avoid the depletion of critical resources such as energy, water and raw materials and prevent environmental degradation caused by facilities and infrastructure throughout their life cycle.
Retrofitting an existing building can often be more cost- effective than building a new facility. Introduction of sustainable design attributes reduces operation costs and environmental impacts, and can increase building resiliency.
Research the literature on sustainable buildings, and what makes them sustainable. Develop a functional architecture highlighting the functionality a building possesses, including the functionality for it to be called a "green (sustainable) building". Perform a functional allocation by identifying some technologies that you may use to achieve this functionality, and therefore qualify your building as sustainable. Also, state some factors that may be used to trade- off these technologies. Research the literature to identify these factors. Develop a requirements document based on the functional architecture, with appropriate physical constraints, to ensure that your building meets the sustainable design objectives.
