Assignment:
This assignment is intended to help you understand the concepts of racism through completing an activity online and thinking critically about how institutional racism affects people's personal lives.
1. This Reflection directly corresponds to "Race: The Power of an Illusion" video from Week 8. Be sure to watch it before completing this Reflection.
2. Then, go to where race lives
- Click on "A Tale of Two Families"
- Click on "Begin Story"
- Read through the stories, selecting "Next" until you reach the end (page 6).
3. In your own words, based on Max and Byron's stories and the video clip "Race: The Power of an Illusion", explain how Max and Byron's current financial situations are related to the system of racism. Be sure to address:
a. How the effects of the discrimination in the housing industry were "passed" down to the next generation (positive effects for whites and negative effects for blacks)
b. How segregation, redlining, and white flight affected Max and Byron's current financial status. (Look for clues in Max and Byron's stories that relate to these items from the video. For example, the value of Max and Byron's parents' homes is directly related to all three of these things. You need to explain how it is related)
Note: There are correct and incorrect answers to this question. Your answer to #3 should NOT reflect your opinion. Instead, you should think critically about the content and demonstrate your ability to understand it and make a clear connection between Max and Byron's stories and the video clip "Race: The Power of an Illusion".
4. Now that you understand the connection between racism and someone's personal life opportunities and financial status:
a. How would you respond to someone who said, "Byron clearly did not work as hard as Max"?
b. How would you respond to someone who said, "Max has everything he does because he worked hard for it"?
