Assignment:
Some of the concepts in social studies can be abstract and may seem more theoretical and less practical for an early childhood teacher. To make these concepts relevant in ways that are personal and important to the early childhood learner, early childhood educators must identify resources to provide a foundation or experience that improves the background knowledge of learners.
Make a resource guide for new early elementary teachers in your district. The guide will include a variety of developmentally appropriate social studies tools and resources, such as books, movies, charts, posters, worksheets, activities, websites, games, technology tools, etc. The tools and resources in this booklet should be current, ensure accessibility and relevance for all students and should maximize learning of the standards.
This will focus on grade 1 using the following three standards:
- Gathering, Interpreting, and Using Evidence: 1. Develop questions about his/her family.
- Chronological Reasoning and Causation: 5. Identify events of the past, present, and future in his/her family life.
- Comparison and Contextualization: 4. Understand the concepts of geography, economics, and history that apply to his/her family.
Select at least three social studies tools and resources for each standard that integrate cultural background, personal knowledge, family, and community of the early childhood students.
Include in your resource guide:
- First page that includes a title, a brief introduction or purpose of the booklet, and an appropriate graphic.
- A page that lists the grade-level and the three social studies standards you have selected.
- Description of selected tools and resources including:
- Potential instructional application of each resource and how it aligns to standards
- How each resource/tool ensures accessibility and relevance for all students and maximizes learning of social studies content in varied contexts
- How each resource/tool integrates the cultural background, personal knowledge, family, and community of early childhood students.
