The concepts of equal opportunity and equal outcomes are different when it comes to focusing on fairness and justice for all people. Equal opportunity refers to availability of opportunities for all the individuals without discrimination whereby, every person starts off at the same point with the same likelihood of success. This means the eradication of practices like prejudice, a lack of education or poor background that may restrict the capabilities of an individual from attaining his or her desires in life. There is no attempt at providing result fairness, only a fairness of procedure of giving each student a fair chance at answering the exam. On the other hand, equal outcome means that individuals will be brought to the same focal point after the activities have been done. This often necessitates the need to mediate in order to equalize the distribution of certain resources or opportunities. Detractors call this approach as counterproductive towards merit and hard work, while advocates suggest that it is the only way of correcting historical injustice.
