Question

Review the key concepts of elimination, fluid and electrolytes, and acid-base. Identify how your knowledge about the prior week's concepts of inflammation, infection, perfusion, and clotting helped you apply the pathophysiologic changes related to elimination, fluids and electrolytes, and acid-base homeostasis. Identify three priority pathophysiologic changes for elimination (urinary and gastrointestinal) that correlate to clinical findings noticed with alterations in fluids and electrolytes. For example, acute or chronic kidney disease can lead to fluid and electrolyte imbalances resulting in cardiac arrest. Which intracellular electrolyte can cause cardiac arrest if not eliminated adequately due to acute or chronic renal disease? Another example is diarrhea (an alteration of bowel elimination), resulting in metabolic acidosis. Describe two complications resulting from diarrhea based on the nursing concepts discussed in the course.
