Option Remembering and forgetting in Ireland

'How people and states remember and forget their past is forever changing.' Drawing on your knowledge of the history of Ireland in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, consider what this statement might mean and then explain if you agree or disagree with it.

Your answer should be no more than 1500 words.

Guidance for Option 2

• This option asks you to assess the merits of the statement that the past is not established once and for all but is remembered and forgotten in continually different ways. You are invited to draw on the knowledge you have acquired in Block 2, Unit 6 and express your view on its validity.
• It will be helpful to start by thinking about the concepts of collective memory and invention of traditions that are explored in the module.
• You can agree, agree in part, or disagree, but it is essential that you support your view with evidence. There are several examples you may want to use from both the Irish revival and the more recent history of the Irish Republic. Keep in mind that you can also use the evidence from built sites that have been preserved or destroyed. Make sure you select the examples that allow you to discuss both the process of remembering and that of forgetting. You are advised to use at least three examples.
• Your knowledge of Irish history will be critical, but you should avoid mere narratives and rather use examples from this history to evaluate the statement.
