You are a member of a seven-person team consisting of five men and two women. One of the original team members, Carlos, is recognized as a valuable, hard-working member. During your time on the team, you have gotten to know him and consider Carlos to be a friend. Lately, he has appeared distracted at work and his contribution to the team has diminished. His work is often late and of poor quality such that other team members are becoming impatient with him. You decide to speak to him privately about it and he confesses that he has been very busy with his other company work outside the team as well as a divorce that has been emotionally and financially difficult. He says that you do not seem supportive. At the same time, Sung-hwan, an ambitious member of the team, has been having more meetings with the boss than usual. You discover that he is portraying himself as the primary "idea person" on the team and making his contribution appear greater than it is. While Sung-hwan is a valuable member, his contribution to the team is virtually the same as all other members. While you like Sung-hwan, he appears to be trying to gain an advantage at the expense of others to advance his position in the organization. You believe that this behavior is going to have a very negative effect on the team as it moves forward.
