Axioms are established truths, and concepts are the foundation of nursing theories. Each plays a role in nursing research and in established nursing theories. Concepts and axioms can give a basis for nursing theories. Concepts can be a guide for future nursing research. They help nurses make informed clinical decisions, they can influence patient care, and can help explain certain patient responses. Axioms and concepts help us to view patients as a whole, taking the patient, environment, and health of our patients into consideration. One example is Florence Nightingale. She established a theory that emphasized how a person's environment plays a role in the patients' ability to get well and recover. These concepts and axioms have helped shape the way nursing has evolved over time.
