Introduction:

At present 83 % of the global primary energy produced is consumed by only 25% of the world's population.

Although traditional energy resources are sufficiently large for several decades to come, the increase in demand will have considerable environmental consequences. It also raises questions such as who will be able to access these resources. This is particularly important for developing countries, where development budgets should not be exhausted on needless investments in cooling equipment and energy supply.

Passive architecture concepts and principles are used in traditional buildings worldwide. Extensive research works have been done on the analysis of the thermal performance of such traditional buildings and found they are well within the comfort range as prescribed by thermal comfort standards for naturally ventilated buildings.

The Problem:

Nama Group (The Electricity Holding Company) was tasked with drafting a framework for the pilot phase of the proposed agency to oversee national energy efficiency and conservation efforts.

The proposed center will oversee the broad spectrum of issues encompassing energy efficiency and conservation. "As part of its mandate, the center will establish baselines and targets for energy efficiency improvement, qualification and certification of Energy Efficiency Officers and Auditors, and so on.

It will also set standards and specifications regulating the import of household and electrical appliances based on their energy consumption, so consumers know what they are buying from the energy efficiency standpoint, and so on.

As you are employees of NAMA Group (The Electricity Holding Company), you are requested to prepare a presentation about passive design that will suit the Omani climate to act as a baseline in the process of forming the guidelines and policies for the Oman National Energy Efficiency Centre.
