Assignment:
Your learning plan will incorporate educational goals and anticipated outcomes from the following sources:
- TAMUK Social Work Program
- your field placement agency
- your field instructor
- you as the student
The goals for each one of these stakeholders will usually fall into 3 categories:
Knowledge: Social Work knowledge is an understanding of professional terminology, facts, principles, concepts, perspectives, and theories.
Skills: The behaviors of practice.
Values: A strong preference that is rooted in your deepest beliefs and commitments, and that affects your choices, decisions, and actions.
Acquiring and blending social work knowledge, skills, and values will help you establish these 3 foundations of practice you need for professional practice. The relationships among these 3 foundations can be described as follows: Skill grows out of knowledge and professional values; in fact, the possession of social work knowledge and values is of little use unless both are expressed in the demonstration of skills. Knowledge and skills can, however, be used to harm or manipulate clients unless they are guided by an ethical value base of services to clients.
For your first journal reflection of the semester, address the following:
- What personal values led you to choose social work as a profession?
- What learning goals do you want to achieve this semester? Identify at least 2 from each category (knowledge, skills, values)
