As you will recall from your Chapter reading assignments on the concept of whiteness and American film, a century of culture defined through cinematic representation in the classical Hollywood narrative has strengthened dominant ideologies and sought to normalize behaviors that attempt to marginalize minority voices and strengthen non-white differences. Like the invisible structure of the Hollywood narrative, cinematic representations of race and ethnicity implicitly and explicitly model "normal behavior" for the audience, and contribute to an often-limited understanding of those around us.

Think back to the examples of immigration and assimilation detailed. How do you think Hollywood has influenced your ideas, your understanding, and even your acceptance of those groups (Italian Americans, Latinos, etc.)? Give specific examples from the text, the edited clips, and from your own experiences.
Given that influence, is Hollywood cinema an accurate representation of reality in that regard?
Do you think people of diverse racial backgrounds are more aware of these issues than are many whites? If so, why?
